pinewooddesign.co.ukUsing Light & Shade to Bring Text to Life

The best book I’ve ever read on drawing is one called “Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain”. After reading it, I’m still pretty bad at drawing, but I did learn a lot about light and shade. In this tutorial we are going to take some very basic principles of light and shade to make a rather impressive looking text effect.

Light Sources

So before we start the tutorial, here is a little diagram about how light might hit an object. Here we have a square object in the middle with light coming from the top left. You can see that where the light hits the object, a shadow is cast on the other side. Note that the shadow is not a Photoshop “Drop Shadow” which makes the object look like it’s hovering above the canvas. Here we want the object to look like it’s a three dimensional thing stuck on the canvas, extruding if you like. Now tell me what other Photoshop tutorial site gives you diagrams? It’s like being back in school!

pinewooddesign

Step 1

We begin the tutorial by drawing a subtle Linear Gradient from dark grey to darker grey. Note that because we want our light to come from the top left, that’s where the lighter part of the document is.

pinewooddesign

Step 2

Now we place some text, I’ve used a very cool font called Agency FB which has a condensed, hard edge feel to it. You should make the text a grey-ish blue colour - #c2c8d4 to be precise.

pinewooddesign

Step 3

Next CTRL-click the text layer and create a new layer above it. In the new layer, with that selection still held, draw a linear gradient of #495a79 to transparent from bottom right to left. So in other words you are darkening the bottom right as shown.

pinewooddesign

Step 4

Set your foreground colour to Black (you can do this by pressing the letter ‘D’ on your keyboard which restores the defaults).

Now CTRL-click the text layer again and create a new layer beneath the text layer. Now press the down arrow on your keyboard once and the right arrow on your keyboard once. Then press ALT-BACKSPACE to fill it with black. Then press down and right again one time and fill with black. Each time you will be moving 1px right and 1px down. You should repeat this process about 30 times (which is why it’s important to use Alt-Backspace instead of the Fill tool).

Note also that to move the selection but not the fills when you press your arrow keys you have to have one of the Marquee tools on. If you switch to the Move Tool (V) when you press down and right you will actually move the black fill as well as the selection and will just be filling the same pixels over and over.

pinewooddesign

Step 5

Here’s what you should now have. Now deselect and make sure you are on the shadow layer, then go to Filter > Blur > Motion Blur and use values of -45 degrees and a distance of 30px.

pinewooddesign

Step 6

Set your shadow layer to Multiply and about 40% Opacity and then hold down SHIFT and press the down arrow and then the right arrow. This will move your object right and down 10px each (Shift tells photoshop to go 10px at a time instead of 1). Now you may have some of the blurred parts of the shadow sticking out to the top and left of the object. If this is the case grab a small soft eraser and gently erase away anything which shouldn’t be shaded (remember the diagram at the beginning).

pinewooddesign

Step 7

Next duplicate the shadow layer, hold SHIFT and move it down and right again. Then run the Motion Blur filter again with a distance of 50px this time and set this layer to Multiply and 20% opacity. This is just to give our shadows more of a trail off.

pinewooddesign

Step 8

Now create a new layer above all the other layers, hold down CTRL and click the main text layer to select its pixels and back on your new layer fill the selection with White. Don’t let go of the selection just yet though, instead press down and right one time to move 1px away and then hit Delete.

Set this thin white line layer to about 80% Opacity.

pinewooddesign

Step 9

As you can see the thin white line gives a sort of highlight effect where the light source is hitting the text and gives the impression that the text is more three dimensional.

pinewooddesign

Step 10

Next we want to create some streams of natural light. Create a new layer above all the others and draw four or five white rectangles approximately similar to those shown (i.e. getting fatter as they go down).

pinewooddesign

Step 11

Now press CTRL-T to transform and rotate and enlarge the rectangles as shown. Now normally you’d press Enter when you’re finished, but this time don’t let go just yet. Instead right click and you will get a pop up menu showing you other types of transforms you can do. Choose “Perspective”. The reason it’s important to do this in one step is so that you don’t lose your bounding box. So take the top left two points and bring them closer together so that the light appears to be coming from one place and spreading out.

pinewooddesign

Step 12

Here we have our four strips of “light”. Now set the layer to Overlay and 20% Opacity and then go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur and give it a blur radius of 6px.

pinewooddesign

Step 13

You should now have something that looks like this.

pinewooddesign

Step 14

Now since those thin strips are meant to be light it would make sense if our highlight layer only showed up where the light was hitting right? So CTRL-click the light layer and then click on the highlight layer from earlier, then while the selection is still on click on the Add Layer Mask button (it’s the one down the bottom of the layer palette to the right of the ‘f’ icon). This will create a Mask that only shows the highlight layer where the light overlaps it.

pinewooddesign

Step 15

So you could stop here, it’s already looking pretty good, but we’ll finish this effect off by adding some warm lighting.

pinewooddesign

Step 16

So first of all create a new layer just above the background and fill it with a pinkish colour - #9d506c.

pinewooddesign

Step 17

Now set the pink layer’s blending mode to Colour and the opacity to 20%. This gives our background a nice reddish-warmth. Over the top of this we can now mix in some yellows. If we don’t put in the reddish cast underneath the result comes out looking overly yellow and not particularly real.

pinewooddesign

Step 18

Now set the pink layer’s blending mode to Colour and the opacity to 20%. This gives our background a nice reddish-warmth. Over the top of this we can now mix in some yellows. If we don’t put in the reddish cast underneath the result comes out looking overly yellow and not particularly real.

pinewooddesign

Step 19

Now set the pink layer’s blending mode to Colour and the opacity to 20%. This gives our background a nice reddish-warmth. Over the top of this we can now mix in some yellows. If we don’t put in the reddish cast underneath the result comes out looking overly yellow and not particularly real.

pinewooddesign

Conclusion

Finally we duplicate the top lighting layer one more time and set it to 65% opacity, then click the Add Layer Mask button on the layers palette again and draw a linear white to black gradient from top left to bottom right. This makes the extra lighting layer fade off as it goes down right.

Soo Jin An
Kookmin University

Part of my life

Profile
Soo Jin was born in Korea and studies Visual Communication at Kookmin University in Seoul. She lives in an urban setting but likes to experience nature. Soo Jin cultivates a roof garden with flowers and trees, and it is a major source of artistic inspiration. She also gains inspiration by talking with and listening to other people. She recently became entranced by vector images but looks forward to experiencing all kinds of graphic design media after her graduation.

Communication objective
Various kinds of expressions exist on an object’s face, just as on human faces. While humans create objects, they do not create their expressions. The face, formed accidentally from an object in everyday life, claims its own existence. As we discover an object’s facial image it evolves into another image through analysis and recomposition. Enjoy the infinite possibilities!

Tools used
All the graphics were generated using Adobe® Illustrator® CS.

You think therefore I am

Profile
Po-Yun Jack Wang was born and raised in Taiwan until the age of 12. Then his family immigrated to Vancouver, British Columbia. After graduating from high school, he came to the U.S. to pursue his dream, to become a graphic designer. He graduated from California College of the Arts in 2007 and received the Thesis Student Achievement Award. After his graduation, he returned to Taiwan, to start his new adventure in the design industry.

Communication objective
Existence is at once familiar and elusive. We have no problem using the word “exists,” but what is it like to exist, and how do we exist? Before you see me, my existence is not something that I can express to you. I intend to prove that our existence is based on each other. You think, therefore I am. I have created an installation 50″ x 182″, with paper cutouts and nine books to illustrate the entity Jack Wang, which your perception of me creates.

Tools used
I used Adobe® Photoshop® CS2 to create the pixilated image of my face, and then I used Illustrator® to lay out each page with a different color for each figure. The logo in the books was created in Illustrator® CS2 using the Live Trace tool of my hand-drawn work. The books are all created with Adobe InDesign® CS2 using a grid system on the master page.

Sean Teegarden
Art Center College of Design

True Character

Profile
Sean Teegarden was born, raised, and home schooled in Downey, California, by two awesome parents. From a young age, Sean had a camera in his hands and on many occasions became frustrated with capturing a finger in the lens, covering his artistic compositions. Graduating high school early, Sean went to Cerritos College where he developed his love of photography in the darkroom. His inspiration for imagery comes from experiences in the Boy Scouting Program, his religious background, and love of 1950’s television. Currently, Sean is attending Art Center College of Design. He will graduate in December and work towards attaining his dream job.

Communication objective
It is said that the masters of old would paint in the flaws on their subjects as a finishing touch, a method of making paintings real. In this series, I made true characteristics of these people blatantly apparent. I wanted viewers to see every little detail that many would call flaws — I see them as True Character.

Tools used
Using the file’s Red, Green, and Blue Channels, I found which color contained the most contrast that enhanced the important details. I copied the information and pasted it into new layers. I used a series of blend modes and layer masks to bring out striking detail and retain great value and color. I employed burn/dodge layers to emphasize shadows and finally employed sharpening and blurring to make every little “Character” jump off the page.

Jörg Block
Hamburg University of Applied Sciences

Research Calendar of the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences 2008

Profile
Jörg Block worked several years as a graphic designer in e-business companies, handling print and corporate design, and web and screen design. Then he started to study illustration at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (Department of Design, Media and Information). At first he fully dedicated himself to artistic basics and to freeform graphic arts and painting. Now he wishes to combine his previous experience from graphic design with a more artistic approach. His special interest is creating illustrations that comment on editorial content in an idiosyncratic and pointed way.
Communication objective
The illustrations were created for the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences research calendar. Each month illustrates a different project to demonstrate the variety of the university’s research activities for the general public. I used striking, funny, or droll images to inspire spontaneous interest in the featured research subjects. I intended the images to stimulate viewer curiosity about the concrete research activities referenced on the back of each calendar page and hope the viewer reads the detailed information there. The illustration subjects include marketing bio food, logistics systems, anesthesia technology, joining technology, bio diesel, and packaging.
Tools used
I started by researching the featured subjects. I created pencil-and-paper sketches and converted the sketches to vector art in Adobe® Illustrator®. I created all the forms using the rectangle and ellipse shapes, the pencil tools, or by combining shapes with the Pathfinder. I defined colors with CMYK values and built a color library. My illustrations feature pure color surfaces, linear and radial gradients, adjustment objects, transparencies, and various fill methods.

Source: http://rawstory.com/news/afp/Iran_drops_dollar_from_oil_deals_re_12082007.html

Don’t know how known/reliable rawstory.com is, so here’s another site validating the same news:
http://www.tehrantimes.com/index_View.asp?code=158 …

Major crude producer Iran has completely stopped carrying out its oil transactions in dollars, Oil Minister Gholam Hossein Nozari said on Saturday, labelling the greenback an “unreliable” currency.

“At the moment selling oil in dollars has been completely halted, in line with the policy of selling crude in non-dollar currencies,” Nozari was quoted as saying by the ISNA news agency.

“The dollar is an unreliable currency, considering its devaluation and the oil exporters’ losses,” he added.

The world’s fourth largest oil exporter, Iran has massively reduced its dependence on the dollar over the past year in the face of US pressures on its financial system.

The United States has successfully encouraged major European and Asian banks to cut their dealings with Iran in a bid to make the Islamic republic give way on its controversial nuclear programme.

Washington has also blacklisted major Iranian banks for alleged support of terrorism and seeking nuclear weapons, charges denied by Tehran.

Iran has reduced its assets in dollars held in foreign banks and urged OPEC to take collective action to price oil in other currencies such as the euro, instead of the US currency which is used across the world at present.

The fall of the dollar, which has weakened considerably against the euro and other currencies in the past 12 months, has affected the revenues of OPEC members because most of them price and sell their oil exports in the US currency.

“get outta my way … let me press that f’n button … let me go, G-dammit …”

BIG MISTAKE AMADEEMAJHAD! You will be butt fucked by george bush very very soon. Don’t fuck with our money. F-16’s, stealth bombers and 150,000 troops knocking on your door motherfucker.

In November 2000, Iraq stopped accepting U.S. dollars for their oil. Counted as a purely political move, Saddam Hussein switched the currency required to purchase Iraqi oil to the euro. Selling oil through the U.N. Oil for Food Program, Iraq converted all of its U.S. dollars in its U.N. account to the euro. Shortly thereafter, Iraq converted $10 billion in their U.N. reserve fund to the euro. By the end of 2000, Iraq had abandoned the U.S. dollar completely. Two months after the United States invaded Iraq, the Oil for Food Program was ended, the country’s accounts were switch back to dollars, and oil began to be sold once again for U.S. dollars. No longer could the world buy oil from Iraq with the euro. Universal global dollar supremacy was restored. It is interesting to note that the latest recession that the United States endured began and ended within the same timeframe as when Iraq was trading oil for euros. Whether this is a coincidence or related, the American people may never know.
http://www.newswithviews.com/ pub…ommentary31.htmAnyone see any similarites between Iraq and Iran? What better way to not only enforce Petrodollar Hegemony but steal the oil as well. Wake up people, the criminals in charge need to be brought to justice.

o sh*t

I’m about ready to stop accepting the dollar too, and i live in the US.

The first sanction against U.S.? More to come…

nice one, idiotic kentucky boy - WHERE are we gonna get 150K troops?

This is the beginning of the end of the US economy. The dollar’s strength is in part due to the fact that it is considered a safe, stable world currency. That perception of strength and stability rests on the fact that the most precious and valuable natural resource on which the modern world is dependent upon for functioning is traded in US dollars. Part of what raised the ire of the US prior to Gulf War II was that Hussien threatened to move Iraq away from trading it’s oil in dollars and instead flirted with a move to Euros. Now that Iran has essentially done what Iraq planned to do . . . . well, this is SERIOUS. This has more potential impact than any slam-and-crash terrorist plot against any combination of buildings on US soil. This strikes DIRECTLY at the strength of the US economy and shines a bright light on the precariousness of this house of cards we all live in with our reliance on the US dollar. The Chinese have been struggling to free themselves of our underperforming currency for quite awhile. The next few months will be interesting to say the least. The US dollar just suffered a MAJOR blow. If your focus tends to be parochial and more focused on the battle of personalities (Bush, Cheney, Ahmedimijan, etc.) , this will simply zoom right over your heads. Continue the rah, rah, USA good, Muslim towelheads bad mantra and you’ll feel just fine. Ignorance is bliss, for you. The reality is that the undercurrent of global financial security just experienced a massive shift as a result of this news. The powers that be in Washington will craftily do everything they can starting now to frame this as a declaration of war. Be prepared and be afraid.

This is a good leading indicator of Cheney/Rumsfeld stepping up the war rhetoric against the “terrorist” state of Iran, making every effort to prop up the petro-dollar as long as possible.
Saddam’s conversion completion from $ to Euro following his rejection of Rumsfeld’s negotiations for a pipeline from Iraq to Jordan resulted in a rain of bombs on Baghdad.
See
http://socrates.berkeley.edu/~pd…scott/ iraq.html
for an author on the oil/$ lead-up.
Chavez’s sales in Euros also guarantees his branding as terrorist; historically, simply being a murderous thug was not a problem, as long as Exxon and Citi National made money.
The slide of the dollar against all non-tied currencies is projected by mainstream analysts to continue for 2-3 years. It is now being blamed on sub-prime mortgages and deflected away from the radical inflationary deficit “printing” by the Fed to fund war contractors and administration cronies. The dropping of reporting of M3 was purportedly because of its increasing irrelevance - true in several senses.
One exacerbating effect is the flight of real estate investment money overseas to reap the earnings differential due solely to the exchange aspect of the trades. Check the buzz in investment circles: it’s all about foreign ETFs these days. I and a lot of others have put all our liquid investment in ETFs and the Euro FXE.The Dollar is going the way of the Peso and Reichsmark; once the military protection game has worn thin for OPEC countries, and already has for Venezuela and Iran, the retreat will only be limited at all by countries with large dollar holdings that want to avoid a complete collapse. The new trend is for large dollar holding treasuries like Abu Dhabi to trade their dollars for real assets in the US, to hold until the dollar bottoms.
Good luck everyone.

Kentucky Idiot: How long do you think it would take China, Saudi Arabia, UAE,Canada, and even freaking Mexico to say “pay us back now!” if any moron went along with your “idea”? That would help. You rape-ublicans are so god damn ignorant it is amazing you can operate a PC. (I am assuming it’s not your mommy who’s dictating for you.)

Where do I sign up to go kick there asses?

Yo Redneck. You know where to sign up. All talk, no action. I dare you.

People who stay abreast of what is happening knew this was coming. It is because of Bush’s constant belicose talk against Iran. There was bound to be a backlash. Now Bush is going to experience the blowback from his inept and corrupt administration and their policies; and as usual, the regular people suffer.

the dollar used by the Federal Reserve was dead long ago. it is not The People’s money or US money. Gold and silver coin is America’s money. DIE FEDERAL RESERVE DOLLAR DIE. and take your banksters with you.

Kentuck and RedNecker, you both are nothing but stupid idiots. It is because of people like you who are causing the demise of the United States of America!Rather than demanding more from your government to protect its solvency, you would rather to continue the falsehood of conservatism. My message to both of you is to pull you heads out of your asses and fight for your Democracy.

Haven’t you been listening to the news lately? Our military is broken you dumbfuckers! The only way we can move forward from the downward spiral is to:
1) Impeach George & Dick
2) Declare a moratorium on the existence of this administration
3) Restructure our campaign rules to rid the need of raising huge amounts of money to get elected into office
4) Clean up our electronic voting machines so that every vote is counted
5) Do away with for profit lobbyists
6) Enforce stiffer penalties on corporations who cook their books
7) Make corporations live up to their promises to their employees, such as pensions, etc.
Make coporations pay their fair share in taxes, if not suspend their rights to opeerate businesses in the US.
9) Rescind NAFTA, CAFTA and all other trade agreements that surpress wages and therefore keep people in poverty
10) If countries that do not provide living wages and protect human rights, we should not enter into trade agreements with them

Those are just a few ideas that will make not only our country a better place to live in, but in fact, would ensure that we, the American People will help to ensure that other countries who want to do business with the US to provide prosperity to their citizery too!

Buh-bye Redneck…we’ll miss you! Hugs-n-kisses (not in a gay way of course, we know there is no such thing as a gay republican). Don’t forget to write.

Will China be next? They may dump the dollar too.

When the Fed lowers interest rates, the dollar falls more!

Will any country accept the dollar?

We wouldnt be in the mess if it werent for the oh so high and mighty conservatives who are too good to talk to their enemies. This administrations Idea of diplomacy puts Al Capone to shame… and we wonder why half the world is scrambling for nukes.Conservatives and their antisocial, unilateral policies are the reason we have absolutely no bargaining leverage with our opponents outside of a bombing campaign…. much like terrorists.

The euro is slowly becoming the preferred currency around the world as countries such as China slowly begin to get rid of their dollar investments.

LOL sanctions against the US

I cannot find this story anywhere in the MSN. You would think it deserves a little mention somewhere.

Wanna buy some greenbacks? Heh heh heh.

VOTE RON PAUL!

jive talkin….great post! Wish I could make it happen now.

Kentucky redneck there’ll be Chinese troops down the west coast within 2 years if your lunatic bush gets his way. And Russia has said that an attack on Iran is an attack on Russia. Guess you’ll be happy when Kentucky is a smoking hole in the ground. What goof doesn’t realize that the money is the Rothschild counterfeit distributed by the FED and has nothing to do with americans other than enslave them. The pentagon is simply the rothschild’s enforcement arm. DUH!

that`s it then…WWWIII coming up…

Ron Paul for President 2008 is America’s only way out of the mess we currently find ourselves in.

Here we come, “America the Defunct, Land of Foreclosures and Bankruptcy”. Derivative hell ahead.

OMG jive talkin! you’re a commie and … uh.. socialist! how DARE you demand the uber rich stop fucking us over!!??Well, Iran just told BushCo “fuck you, I’m not afraid of you”.. now let’s see what faux cowboy does.
