Norway has emerged as the winner of the Eurovision Song Contest, held in the Russian capital, Moscow.

Singer and violinist Alexander Rybak, 23, smashed the record for the most points awarded during the competition.

Iceland came second in the vote, followed by Azerbaijan which took the third place.

The UK’s Jade Ewen, singing an Andrew Lloyd Webber song, ended in fifth position – a marked improvement on last year’s finish at the foot of the table.

For the first time, voting in the final was split between televoting and panels of musical experts, which was supposed to reduce the incidence of predictable and neighbourly votes.

A total of 42 countries voted on the 25 songs, with Norway scoring a record 387 points.

Alexander Rybak, who was born in the former Soviet Union, is a well-known musician in Norway.

A classically-trained violinist and pianist, he wrote his country’s winning entry, Fairytale.

The previous biggest points haul was scored by Finland’s Lordi with Hard Rock Hallelujah in Greece in 2006.

No country suffered the indignity of receiving “nul points” this year but Finland finished in last place.

Denmark’s entry – Brinck singing Believe Again – was written by Boyzone’s Ronan Keating and was performed in the Irish singer’s style.

Germany’s act featured US cabaret artist Dita von Teese, who used to be married to rock star Marilyn Manson.

Her costume was slightly more demure than her outfit at the dress rehearsal after she was reportedly told to cover up by the European Broadcasting Union, which runs Eurovision, because it was unsuitable for a family audience.

Graham Norton was making his debut as commentator for the BBC, replacing Sir Terry Wogan, who bowed out last year.

‘Greatest talents’

Speaking in the Russian capital, Norton revealed that he had spoken to his predecessor, who commentated on every Eurovision final from 1980.

“Terry rang me to wish me good luck,” said the TV presenter. “He advised me to resist having a drink until the fifth song,” he added.

Jade Ewen was chosen to represent the UK through a TV talent contest, with the winning song written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyricist Diane Warren.

Her fifth place was a highlight for the UK, which has had a dismal record in recent years, with 2008’s entry, Andy Abraham, finishing last with 14 points.

It was the second time in five years the UK had finished at the bottom, with Jemini’s 2003 effort famously scoring “nul points”.

Germany’s Alex Swings Oscar Sings! act was joined by burlesque dancer Dita Von Teese, who was ordered to cover up for the family audience.

The UK’s entry Jade Ewen was accompanied by Andrew Lloyd Webber, who wrote the song. She ended a dismal spell for the UK by finishing fifth.

YouTube is blocking all premium music videos to UK users after failing to reach a new licensing agreement with the Performing Right Society (PRS).

Premium music videos will not be accessible to UK YouTube users

Thousands of videos will be unavailable to YouTube users from later on Monday.

Patrick Walker, YouTube’s director of video partnerships, told BBC News that the move was “regrettable”.

Steve Porter, head of the PRS, said he was “outraged… shocked and disappointed” by YouTube’s decision.

In a statement, Mr Porter said the move “punishes British consumers and the songwriters whose interests we protect and represent”.

The PRS has asked YouTube to reconsider its decision as a “matter of urgency”.

The body, which represents music publishers, added: “Google has told us they are taking this step because they wish to pay significantly less than at present to the writers of the music on which their service relies, despite the massive increase in YouTube viewing.

“This action has been taken without any consultation with PRS for Music and in the middle of negotiations between the two parties.”

Mr Walker told BBC News the PRS was seeking a rise in fees “many, many factors” higher than the previous agreement.

He said: “We feel we are so far apart that we have to remove content while we continue to negotiate with the PRS.”

“We are making the message public because it will be noticeable to users on the site.”

Videos will begin to be blocked from 1800 GMT with the majority of them made inaccessible over the next two days.

YouTube pays a licence to the PRS which covers the streaming of music videos from three of the four major music labels and many independent labels.

Stream online

While deals with individual record labels cover the use of the visual element and sound recording in a music video, firms that want to stream online also have to have a separate deal with music publishers which covers the music and lyrics.

In the UK, the PRS acts as a collecting society on behalf of member publishers for licensing fees relating to use of music.

YouTube stressed that it continued to have “strong partnerships” with three of the four largest record labels in the world.

Mr Walker said the PRS was asking for a “prohibitive” rise in the cost of a new license.

While not specifying the rate the PRS was seeking, he said: “It has to be a rate than can drive a business model. We are in the business for the long run and we want to drive the use of online video.

“The rate they are applying would mean we would lose significant amounts of money on every stream of a music video. It is not a reasonable rate to ask.”

New deal

YouTube has also complained of a lack of transparency by the PRS, saying the organisation would not specify exactly which artists would be covered by any new deal.

“That’s like asking a consumer to buy a blank CD without knowing what musicians are on it,” a statement from YouTube UK says on its official blog.

YouTube is the world’s most popular online video site but has been under increased pressure to generate more revenue since its purchase by Google for $1.65 billion in 2006.

“We are not willing to do this [new licensing deal] at any cost,” said Mr Walker.

He said the issue was an industry-wide one and not just related to YouTube.

“By setting rates that don’t allow new business models to flourish, nobody wins.”

Services such as Pandora.com, MySpace UK and Imeem have also had issues securing licence deals in the UK in the last 12 months.

jeffbuckley160x120Late star Jeff Buckley scored his biggest ever hit last night when Hallelujah shot to number tow in the UK chart.

It finished just behind the version of the same song by X Factor winner Alexandra Burke, It is the first time that two versions of the same song have taken the top two positions in the chart for 51 years.

The last time such a feat occurred was in 1957 when Tommy Steele and Guy Mitchell held the top two positions with Singin’ The Blues when the charts were in their infancy.

Buckley’s 1994 version of Hallelujah, from his only complete album Grace, found a new lease of life thanks to an online campaignin response to the track being given to the X Factor victor. Buckley, who drowned in 1997, was not the only star whose archive version of the track made the chart – Leonard Cohen, the song’s author, was at number 36 with his original performance.

Burke’s track sold 576,000 copies in a week making it the fastest selling single by a female solo artist, beating another X Factor winner Leona Lewis’s A Moment Like This. Buckley sold 81,000 copies of Hallelujah simply on download.

Buckley’s ‘Hallelujah’ – from his 1994 debut ‘Grace’ – is currently at number 43 in the charts, climbing six places from number 49 last week (November 30). The song has not been re-released physically.

There are several protest groups on social network sites such as Facebook urging fans of the song to buy Buckley‘s version and boycott the ‘X Factor’ one

I heard there was a secret chord
that david played and it pleased the lord
but you don’t really care for music, do you
well it goes like this the fourth, the fifth
the minor fall and the major lift
the baffled king composing hallelujah

hallelujah…

well your faith was strong but you needed proof
you saw her bathing on the roof
her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you
she tied you to her kitchen chair
she broke your throne and she cut your hair
and from your lips she drew the hallelujah

hallelujah…

baby i’ve been here before
i’ve seen this room and i’ve walked this floor
i used to live alone before i knew you
i’ve seen your flag on the marble arch
but love is not a victory march
it’s a cold and it’s a broken hallelujah

hallelujah…

well there was a time when you let me know
what’s really going on below
but now you never show that to me do you
but remember when i moved in you
and the holy dove was moving too
and every breath we drew was hallelujah

well, maybe there’s a god above
but all i’ve ever learned from love
was how to shoot somebody who outdrew you
it’s not a cry that you hear at night
it’s not somebody who’s seen the light
it’s a cold and it’s a broken hallelujah

hallelujah…

JEFF BUCKLEY

Buckley’s version needs to be heard by a new generation before they start believing EOGHAN QUIGG, or whoever wins the ITV1 talent show, is the first person to sing it.

Fans of Buckley — who drowned in the Mississippi in 1997 — have launched an internet campaign to get it in the charts.

It is already on the verge of the Top 40 and with your help can become a surprise Christmas hit.

So if you love it or haven’t ever heard it, get downloading — it’s absolutely incredible.

I am mildly amused by SIMON COWELL choosing a song for his winner with the line: “You don’t really care for music, do you.”

But there is nothing wrong with new interpretations of timeless songs and it’s a great choice for The X Factor winner.

Buckley’s version is, of course, a cover too. But before kids start asking their mates if they’ve bought “that Eoghan Quigg song”, the best version of this classic needs to get out there.

Buckley earned his first US No1 posthumously in March after JASON CASTRO performed the song on American Idol.

If the Yanks can turn Buckley’s version into a chart smash, so can we.

From Fackbook:

Description:

*************************************************************
*************************************************************
WELL DONE EVERYBODY – NUMBER 2!!!
We’ve been reported on by mainstream media all over the world, brought Buckley thousands of new fans, seriously challenged Cowell, given Cohen a nice Christmas present and most importantly, got a track that hasn’t been released for 14 years to at Number 2 in the Christmas week charts without any of the support other artists get… you’re all pretty amazing!
*************************************************************
*************************************************************

Just to make it clear:
1. We’re not attacking Alexandra.
2. We KNOW the money goes to Sony! It isn’t about the money.
(And no, the money from Jeff’s version DOESN’T go to Cowell!)
3. We know Leonard Cohen wrote Hallelujah!!!
4. We aren’t annoyed ‘just because it’s a cover.’

!!—BEFORE JOINING THIS GROUP, PLEASE BUY THE JEFF BUCKLEY HALLELUJAH SINGLE FROM ALL OF THE ONLINE STORES IN THE LINKS BELOW—!!

Also, please join the group’s page so you can receive updates on how the campaign is going! http://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Jeff-Factor/66928891080

Following the rather depressing news that this year’s X factor finalist will be covering Leonard Cohen’s beautiful ‘Hallelujah,’ I think everyone should download the Jeff Buckley version, instead of buying the inevitably soulless version churned out by Simon Cowell’s Crimbo flash in the pan.

This is not a group intended to make cruel or derogatory remarks about any participants in this years X factor, but if you love Buckley’s version, let’s make sure everyone forgets the pale imitation as quickly as possible.

We can make this work, and make a huge statement against the barrage of cynical manufactured pop dirtying up our charts. I am willing to download this version the week the X factor version comes out, and I know others will be too.

To make this as easy as possible we have posted the download links below:

We’ve seen pictures from the factory coming loaded on new iPhones before, but this is the first time we’ve seen what appear to be intentional snapshots loaded on a new iPhone. Surprise: the person who put your iPhone together is a cute girl!

This is has got to be one of the coolest thing in our digital, mass-production, globalized age.

iPhone factory girl, you are now world-famous. you knew this was going to happen, right?

The photos were found on a new iPhone shipped to the UK, and one of the pictures was even set as the home screen. Aaaaaaadorable!

She doesn’t take drugs or drink alcohol, and says that she doesn’t really understand British humour.
But, she’s a romantic at heart – everyday she fills a lunchbox for her fiancé and on Valentines she even made him heart shaped sandwiches.

In Celebrity Big Brother, Jade Goody and boyfriend Jack Tweedy became the first couple last year, but they have since split up.

Big Brother has promised that this year’s contestants will not have an easy life in the house, and that the game-playing will begin immediately.

The show’s new zero tolerance policy will see housemates sent to a jail area or a solitary confinement zone for persistent rule breaking.

The new stars of Big Brother better be on their best behaviour as it was revealed today a jail to punish those who step out of line will be used on the show.

Taking the form of a tiny claustrophobic area enclosed by metal bars, the mini prison will be situated in the garden.

And housemates better be ready to get green as emerged they will be growing their own food this year.

Producers said the 16 contestants will have to cultivate their own potatoes and carrots and season their food and herbs from the garden as they released the latest pictures from the house.

As well as having vegetable boxes, the new “green” version of the show will mean there is also a large recycling bin placed in the kitchen.

Tasteless … tacky bathroom with David model and swan taps

GAUDY help us! Summer’s almost here so it must be time to unveil . . . the house that taste forgot.

Yep, love it or loathe it, the endless TV marathon/drivel (delete where applicable) that is Big Brother returns to our screens on June 5.

And a first glimpse at the new set proves that all that glitters definitely isn’t gold.

The garish, bling-ridden bathroom looks like the place Liberace went to die.

Festooned with gilded swan taps, flowers, champagne bottles and a bronze cast of Michaelangelo’s David, the entire room is done up with a marble effect last seen in Dorian’s Chigwell home in Birds Of A Feather.

What I can say? HORRIBLE!!!
Eyes-spy … new entrance for BB9

House arrest … cell-like rooms

The housemates will get another shock when they see the shared bedroom, which looks more like an Eastern Bloc jail cell.

It has “locker” walls and eight beds shared between 12 housemates, each kitted out with scratchy wool blankets.

With any luck the grime-glitz contrast will drive inmates mad within days.

In another twist, show bosses have built the bathroom next to the lounge.

A source tells us: “There’s a huge window between the bathroom and the lounge, so you’ll be able to see everyone. It’s going to be highly pervy.”

The finalists were picked late last week.

………………….YAWN…

I myself don’t find BB entertaining as it use to be, but that’s just my opinion. If the programme this year reverts to its “back to basics” policy I would consider watching it from time to time. I have seen in the news that a contestant’s cousin from a few years back — “Get Grace Out”s cousin.. She’s supposed to be making claims that she’s a bigger bitch than Grace…..— is being held in reserve for this years show, or may even be a contestant already. So as things stand there not really looking far and wide or using a cross section of society already, so it would seem that the show is doomed to failure. If channel 4 cant go out amongst the general public to source contestants, how close are we really to having “ normal” people in the house.
All the house mates will be mildly attractive, or have slept with a football player, be a stripper, be mid way through some surgical operation to change there gender, will come out regarding there sexuality, during a task , or will be down right obnoxious, just to get attention and a good newspaper deal when they get thrown out
Dull is not good TV, but channel 4 need to find that fine line between good and down right stupid, because they no they need big personalities to make everyone watch

Still I’ll give it a try before I crucify it, will see you all on launch night!
